SALES COVER LETTER

y Teena Rose
A sales cover letter can seem like the most difficult to write. Your sales skills, in part, are based on what you place in your "own" sales cover letter ... sell yourself, and you can sell the company's products/services.

Sales cover letters are not any more difficult to write than any other cover letter, really. No doubt, the key points listed in the cover letter are different than those listed for others though. For sales channel managers, for example, your efforts are focused on building channel sales activities; i.e. tracking channel sales, account growth.

Focusing on lead development, territorial sales growth, account management, as well as, the depth of your selling skills such as # years in sales and the specialty of your sales abilities (i.e. technical/software sales). So what's the best way to handle your sales cover letter?

Write down the 5 "gems" relative to you. Reflect your sales accomplishments equally with your selling skills.

  • Have you opened new sales territories?
  • Or, did you build upon an existing territory?
  • Secure a new sales channel?
  • Do you perform as a sales consultant for clients?
  • Do you apply best sales strategies for your employers?
  • Do you thrive within a specific client demographic?
  • Do you thrive as a channel sales manager, sales consultant, bio/pharmaceutical sales, sales trainer?

Re:

Dear Mr(s)._______:

Your time is valuable; and as such, I'll get right to it. First, I have over 12 years of sales experience developing multimillion-dollar B2B accounts throughout challenging industries. I hold a nice combination of sales, marketing, public relations, and corporate communications experience, applying this knowledge from the ground floor when necessary. In addition to beginning from the bottom rung, I also thrive when taking on an existing sales team; handle technical/software sales, strategic business development, and forging strong customer relationships where none existing previously. Frankly, I would be a dynamic addition to your sales management team. Specified in my resume, you'll find specific experience spanning …

Product Introductions * Sales Management * Product Line Revitalization * Public Speaker/Communicator * National Account Management * Impact Presentations * Departmental Budgeting/Forecasting * New Business Development * Competitive Products * Product Campaign Development/Management

Over the years, I've conceived, developed, and executed strategies and initiatives that drive sales and build customer loyalty. Further, I have successfully managed new business initiatives and achieved exceptional results. For example, I grew the northwest territory by 38.5%, secured sales approximately 182% above quotas at A. Prot, and generated a 42% increase in clients between 2003 and 2005. I've led the start-up of a new corporate retail products division, executed strategic company acquisition plans, managed national key accounts, and developed sales teams.

Given the opportunity, I would quickly comprehend products and identify target markets to develop key accounts with unparalleled customer satisfaction. I look forward to having an opportunity to discuss with you how I may fit into your sales team in the near future. Please feel free to call me on my cell phone xxx.xxx.xxxx.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Regards,

Susan M. Smith

Sales Cover Letter Questions?

What should I keep in mind when writing a sales cover letter? Like any cover letter, write content with the recipient in mind. Write a cover letter should always be individualized to the company that is hiring. Did someone refer you to the company? Mention it. Do you have unique selling skills, or did you write and implement a specifically incredible business expansion program? List it. What about foreign language skills? You get the idea. Today, cover letters can't afford to be ho-hum, nor can jobseekers themselves. Job competition is increasing, so having a "leg up" on the next guy will aide you in writing an impressive sales cover letter.

Should I list salary requirements and commission requirements within my cover letter? Provide such information only when requested to do so. Prematurely listing your current or past sales salary with commissions/bonuses can negatively affect your candidacy. It's best to save these all-too-critical details for the proper time.

What can I list in my pharmaceutical sales cover letter? Like with the resume, focus the letter on *all* your relevant and transferrable skills. Relevant skills include previous involvement in the medical field, and maybe that internship that placed you in a dentist's office. You were exposed to medical terminology, right? Maybe you greeted medical sales  reps while in this role. If so, list it. Other relevant details to include in your cover letter would be involvement with any professional/non-profit group or organization, participation with those in the medical community, activity in sales/lead generation groups, or former involvement working with pharmaceuticals (pharmacy technician).
