If you believe Jimmy Sweeney in his article "The Good Old-Fashioned Fax Cover Letter," the fax cover letter is making a come back. I'm not sure about such a statement, but I can say sending a cover letter via fax is easier than every. Although snail mail and faxing takes more time, jobseekers like that a fax must be handled by someone. An email doesn't seem to offer the same perks of a fax cover letter does it? Gosh, we don't even know whether emails are read anymore -- computers seem to be handling everything these days. =/
What's Different About a Fax Cover Letter
The layout of fax cover letters somewhat mirror traditional letter formats; i.e. the fax is dated and follows a text is aligned against the left margin. One difference to fax cover letters includes the TO/FROM; a feature not seen in traditional business correspondence, of course. Another main difference is fax cover letters vary in length. Oftentimes, fax cover letters are lighter than typical cover letters so keep that in mind when developing your own. Well, maybe I'm stretching the truth a little bit ... there are still companies that maintain fax lines. Why? Not sure. As technology progresses, the options available to businesses continues to rise. A particularly terrific advancement: ability to send and receive faxes without the need for a fax machine, or a dedicated fax line for that matter. In another 10 years, the fax machine will likely be as outdated as Smith Corona Typewriters.
The technologies offered to business are now being used amongst individuals too. The hottest fax services are online services. You receive and send faxes without a fax line, fax machine, or even a printer ... you send the fax from your computer, so there's no need to print anything. How great is that?
One free service brought to my attention includes FaxZero.com. The site offers free submission of documents up to three pages in length, allowing you to send a maximum of two faxes per day. Since FaxZero doesn't charge a fee, they recoup expenses by placing an ad within the cover sheet of each fax -- maybe not a completely professional alternative for jobseeker purposes; but the advertisement is typically the company's name. Not too bad, right?
